Unclaimed Property and Estates

Responsibility: Revenu Québec

Revenu Québec is responsible for recovering and administering unclaimed property such as estates, financial products (securities, bonds, savings accounts, etc.) and all other property located in Quebec whose owners are unknown or cannot be found.

These assets are registered in the Unclaimed Property Register of Revenu Québec.

Unclaimed property is property whose owner is unknown or deemed not to belong to anyone. There are different types of unclaimed property:

  • assets of unclaimed estates
  • property located in Quebec whose owners are unknown or cannot be found
  • property abandoned by dissolved corporations or legal persons
  • property found on the body of an unknown person or on an unclaimed body
  • vehicles abandoned on the public highway;
  • unclaimed financial proceeds such as
  • deposits of money
  • (except those made in banks or federally chartered trust companies, which must be claimed from the Bank of Canada);
  • the value of cheques or bills of exchange certified or accepted by a financial institution and drafts issued by such an institution
  • funds, securities and other property held in a safety deposit box at a financial institution
  • funds, securities and other property held in trust
  • funds, securities and other property received by a broker or securities adviser
  • amounts payable for the redemption or repurchase of securities;
  • insured amounts payable under a life insurance contract;
  • amounts payable under an annuity or pension contract or plan;
  • interest, dividends and income from the above-mentioned assets.
