Guaranteed Income Supplement (Canada)
Responsibility: Service Canada
When a person who receives the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) dies, the payments stop. However, if you are the surviving spouse or common-law partner and are already receiving the GIS, payments continue based on your personal income. You must request a review of your case.
You must apply to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). Contact us at 1-800-277-9915 to get an application form.
You can also reapply for the GIS by filing your income tax and benefit return. The Seniors 55 and Over section of the Canada Revenue Agency website has the information you need to file your income tax and benefit return.
If you were not eligible for the GIS before, but think you may be eligible now, you should apply as soon as possible.
Normally, you must apply for GIS for yourself. If you are applying for someone else, contact us to find out how.
