Shelter Allowance

Responsibility: Société d'habitation du Québec

When a person receiving a shelter allowance dies, you must notify Revenu Québec of the situation. If this person was living alone, the amounts cease to be paid the month following his or her death. If the person had a spouse living in the dwelling, he or she will continue to benefit from the program until the end of the reference year, unless he or she requests a review.

In all cases, you must provide proof of death to Revenu Québec to have the changes made.

Note: The fiscal year of the program begins on October 1st of one year and ends on September 30th of the following year. You must therefore reapply for an evaluation of your file each year.

The Shelter Allowance program provides financial assistance to low-income households who are spending too much of their budget on housing.

The program is jointly administered by the Société d'habitation du Québec and Revenu Québec.

The maximum assistance granted is $80 per month and is not taxable.

PAYMENT

The allowance for one year is paid in equal monthly payments of a minimum amount of $10 up to the total amount granted.

Payment is made on the first business day of each month by check or direct deposit.

Once the applicant's eligibility is recognized, the assistance is granted starting the month following the date of the application made to Revenu Québec.
