Canada's Old Age Security Benefits

Responsibility: Service Canada

As soon as possible, you must notify Service Canada of the death of an Old Age Security recipient. This will cancel the benefits. Note that the estate is entitled to these monies for the month of death only.

Otherwise, you will have to pay back the overpayment. If the beneficiary receives his or her benefits by direct deposit, immediately ask the financial institution to freeze the deposits or return the overpayments made since the death.

Note: If the deceased is your spouse, you may be entitled to benefits including death benefits, survivor's pension, etc. If you have a dependent child under the age of 18 from your relationship, the death may affect the amount of the Child Tax Benefit.

Cancellation of Benefits Following the Death of a Pensioner/Beneficiary
When an Old Age Security (OAS) and/or Canada Pension Plan (CPP) pensioner/beneficiary dies, their benefits must be cancelled. Benefits are paid in the month of death; those received after that must be repaid.

The benefits affected are as follows
