Death by Crime Pension

When a loved one dies as a result of a crime, you may be able to receive compensation from the Workplace Health and Safety Commission. This organization is responsible for applying the Crime Victims Compensation Act.
Under certain conditions, if you are the spouse of the deceased or a dependant or child of the deceased, you may be entitled to an annuity, reimbursement of funeral expenses and the cost of transporting the body. You should check the time limits for making your application. If you need help, check with the Crime Victims' Assistance Centres in your area. There is no charge for services.
The next of kin of a victim of a crime against the person may receive death benefits.
These death benefits can be :
- an annuity for the victim's dependents;
- compensation for the parents of a minor child who died as a result of a crime
- reimbursement for funeral expenses and transportation of the body for the person who paid for them.
PENSION FOR DEPENDENTS
The amount of the pension is based on the victim's salary.
The pension for the spouse is paid for a minimum period of 5 years and can be terminated in certain situations.
COMPENSATION FOR THE PARENTS OF A MINOR
The amount of the benefit is $2,000.
REIMBURSEMENT OF FUNERAL EXPENSES
The amount of the reimbursement is $3,000, indexed annually.
REIMBURSEMENT OF THE COST OF TRANSPORTING THE BODY
The amount of reimbursement is up to $500.
These amounts are not taxable.
Family members may also receive psychotherapeutic rehabilitation services.
