Driver's license
Responsibility: Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec
When a loved one dies, if he or she had a driver's license, you must notify the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec to cancel the license. If you are the liquidator of the estate, you are authorized to request reimbursement of the cost of the driver's licence.
You have the option of going to a Société service center or mailing your request. You must provide the licensee's personal information, including date of birth, and bring the licensee's driver's license, original death certificate, and other documentation to prove the death. In all cases, reimbursement will be made by cheque payable to the estate and sent by mail.
Note: Don't forget to take note of the driver's license number.
Following the death of a driver's licensee, the executor of the estate may apply to have the deceased's driver's license cancelled and the cost of the license reimbursed.
BENEFITS / GRANTS
The amount of reimbursement for the cost of a deceased person's driver's license is calculated from the date of death to the last day of the license's validity on a monthly basis. Only full months not used are eligible for reimbursement.
If the driver's licence was paid for by pre-authorized debits and there are still debits to be made, the amount of the refund will be small, as the fee and insurance contribution have not been fully paid.
In the case of a driver's licence cancellation at a point of service, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec will reimburse the liquidator of the estate in cash (up to $20) if the liquidator can prove his or her identity and surrender the deceased's driver's licence.
If the liquidator is unable to surrender the driver's licence, the cancellation can still be made if he or she can prove his or her identity. However, the refund will be made by cheque payable to the estate and sent by mail.
