Social Insurance Card
Responsibility: Service Canada Centre
When a loved one dies, you must return their SIN card to the nearest Service Canada Centre, along with a photocopy of the death certificate or declaration of death. This reduces the risk of identity theft. You can do this in person or by mail.
If you do not have the card and you know the social insurance number, you must write it on the photocopy of the documents. If you do not have the card or the deceased's social insurance number, you must still notify Service Canada of the death. With the proper documentation, Service Canada can provide you with the deceased's social insurance number so that you can proceed with the estate settlement process. If you choose to send the information by mail, the address is
Social Insurance Registration Office
P.O. Box 7000, Bathurst, New Brunswick E2A 4T1
Note: Before you cancel this card, be sure to write down the deceased's social insurance number. You may need it to fulfill certain obligations related to the death.
It is important to inform Service Canada. This will reduce the risk of someone else using the deceased's Social Insurance Number (SIN).
However, you will still be able to use the SIN for estate administration purposes.
