Child Support (Quebec)
Responsibility: Régie des rentes du Québec
If you are affected by the death of your spouse or child, this may have an effect on the Child Assistance payment and, if applicable, on the supplement for disabled children. The Régie des rentes takes into account family income and the number of dependent children to determine the amounts paid as financial assistance to parents under this measure. You must therefore notify the Régie of any significant change.
If your child dies, the Directeur de l'état civil automatically notifies the Régie of the situation. If the Support Payments were being made quarterly, they will stop the quarter following the death. If you were receiving the payment monthly, you will receive it until the end of the quarter in which the death occurred.
Note: The Calcul@ide simulation tool, available on the Régie's website, allows you to evaluate the amount you may be entitled to receive in the event of a review.
The Child Assistance measure is a financial aid paid to families with dependent children under 18 years of age. This measure is administered by the Régie des rentes du Québec (RRQ) and includes two components: the Child Assistance Payment and the Supplement for a Handicapped Child.
The amount of the child support payment varies from one family to another. It is calculated each year by taking into account the family income, the number of dependent children under 18 years of age residing with the beneficiary, the marital status (with or without a spouse) and the number of children in shared custody.
BENEFITS / GRANTS
Child Support amounts are indexed on January 1 of each year and are paid to only one person per family. In addition, they cannot be assigned or seized.

DEATH
If a child dies in the month of birth, he or she is not eligible for the Child Support Payment or the Child Disability Supplement. However, if the child dies after the month of birth, the Régie will stop payments at the beginning of the quarter following the death.
TAX TREATMENT
If the Régie does not know the family income because the beneficiary's or spouse's income tax return is being processed by Revenu Québec, a temporary payment is made for a period of 3 months (based on the previous year's income). Adjustments are retroactive, if applicable. If the Child Support payment for the year is less than the temporary payment granted, the beneficiary will have to repay the difference.
