Benefits for funeral expenses (Social assistance and social solidarity programs)

Responsibility: Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale

If you have to pay for the funeral of a low-income person, the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale may be able to reimburse you for the expenses related to his or her funeral, without that person necessarily being a recipient of last-resort financial assistance (social assistance). You must be his or her spouse, a close relative, a person in charge of a foster home or family, a minister of religion or the Curateur public du Québec.

The Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MESS) may grant a special benefit to reimburse the cost of funeral expenses for a deceased person, without that person necessarily receiving last-resort financial assistance (Social Assistance Program or Social Solidarity Program). Similarly, it is not necessary for the applicant for the special benefit to be a recipient.

BENEFITS / SUBSIDIES

The maximum amount granted to pay for the funeral of a dependent adult or child is $2,500 per deceased person.

TAX TREATMENT

Special funeral benefits are not taxable in Quebec.
