Death Benefit as a result of good citizenship

Responsibility: Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail

If one of your loved ones died while performing an act of good citizenship or as a result of an act of good citizenship, his or her spouse and dependent persons and children may receive death benefits. You must prove that the rescuer had reasonable grounds to believe that the rescued person's life was in danger.

Depending on the circumstances, an annuity is provided for the surviving spouse and dependents as well as reimbursement for funeral expenses and the cost of transporting the body.

The Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail administers compensation for victims under the Act to Promote Good Citizenship. You should check the time limits for submitting a claim.

Note: Anyone can nominate a rescuer to the Department of Justice's Citation for Citizenship program. The Department of Justice awards honors, distinctions or awards under the Good Citizenship Act.

Dependents of a person who dies while performing a civic act may receive death benefits.

These death benefits may be:

  • an annuity for dependents;
  • a reimbursement of funeral expenses and the cost of transporting the body to the person who paid them.

DEPENDANTS' PENSION

The amount of the pension is based on the salary of the rescuer.

The spouse's pension is paid for a minimum period of 5 years and may be terminated in certain situations.

***Restrictions:
In the event of the death of a police officer, firefighter or any person whose assistance is accepted or required by a municipal fire department in connection with a disaster, the dependents of the rescuer will receive death benefits under the Worker's Compensation Act.

REIMBURSEMENT OF FUNERAL EXPENSES

The amount of reimbursement is $600.

REIMBURSEMENT OF THE COST OF TRANSPORTING THE BODY

The amount of reimbursement is up to $500.

These amounts are not taxable.
