Orphan's pension (Quebec Pension Plan)
Responsibility: Régie des rentes du Québec
If you have a dependent child under the age of 18, he or she is entitled to an orphan's pension from the Régie des rentes du Québec, provided you have made sufficient contributions to the Québec Pension Plan. The person or organization that supports the child can receive the pension. The pension ends when the child turns 18.
To apply
You must complete the Application for Survivor Benefits form and attach the required documents.
Note: The death of a parent may result in a change in the amount of the Child Support Payment and the Child Disability Supplement. Remember to notify the Régie des rentes du Québec, which is responsible for applying these measures.
The orphan's pension is a benefit that is paid to the person or organization that is responsible for the minor child of a deceased worker. This benefit is paid by the Régie des rentes du Québec only if the deceased person has made sufficient contributions to the Québec Pension Plan.
The payment of this pension may be added to the surviving spouse's pension, if he or she is responsible for the child.
However, in the case of the death of both parents, only one pension is paid.
RATES AS OF JANUARY 1, 2009
The amount of the orphan's pension is $67.95. It is paid on the last working day of each month.
This amount is taxable and reported in the child's income. It is indexed annually.
